Alcala’s Council Resolution for Google Fiber

A RESOLUTION introduced by Councilmembers John Alcala, Sylvia Ortiz, Deborah Swank, Karen Hiller, Larry Wolgast, Bob Archer, Jack Woelfel and Richard Harmon in support of participation in Google’s gigabit fiber optic trial community.

WHEREAS, Google announced that it is planning to build and test new high speed broadband networks in select locations across the country and has asked cities and states who wish to be part of the experiment to make application by March 26, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Google’s gigabit fiber network would run on a system of fiber optic cables and deliver speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today. If selected to participate, it would create opportunities for Topeka to attract businesses to our community; improve the quality of life for our citizens; and improve our schools, health care system and government agencies

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Topeka that the City of Topeka welcomes the opportunity to participate in this unique technological experiment, if selected as Google trial community, to benefit Topeka citizens in providing all opportunities to access Internet Technologies

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all resolutions or rules, or portions thereof, inconsistent with the provisions of this resolution are hereby rescinded or repealed.

Should any section, clause or phrase of this resolution be declared to be invalid, the same shall not affect the validity of this resolution as a whole, or any part thereof, other than the part so declared to be invalid.

    This is great news from the city council
    It would give Shawnee country and the surrounding areas a real boost economically.
